The Department & Role

A positive role model to their peers and students, the Foundation Pathways Lecturer role also represent's the University and its values, promoting the School at external and internal events, this role will be reporting into the School of Foundation Programme Team Leader.

The Foundation Pathways Lecturer at are accountable for delivering an excellent teaching and learning programmes. They will ensure they design excellent teaching material and deliver this to their students while continuously managing their own teaching activity and reflect on practice and development of skills, with support/guidance as needed.

Key Activities and Responsibilities

  • Undertake administrative activities to support teaching and learning activities.
  • Design teaching material and teach on undergraduate and/or postgraduate level programmes.
  • Ensure that the content, methods of delivery and learning materials meet the programme and module learning objectives.
  • Use appropriate teaching, learning and assessment methods.
  • Demonstrate and promote high levels of digital literacy with teaching and resource methods and approaches.
  • Develop students’ knowledge in the form of practical skills, understanding and techniques.
  • Challenge thinking, foster debate and develop the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking.
  • Help to develop new course proposals.
  • Develop own teaching methods with guidance.
  • Set and mark coursework and exams in accordance with University policies and procedures to undertake assessment of students’ work and give feedback.
  • Select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria; assess the work and progress of students by reference to the criteria.
  • Supervise the work of students, provide advice on study skills.
  • Identify areas where current provision is in need of updating or enhancement.
  • Appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances. Refer students as appropriate to services providing further help.
  • Contribute to the quality assurance process. Supervise undergraduate and/or postgraduate student dissertations, projects, fieldwork and placements, as appropriate.
  • Plan and prioritise own day-to-day activity within the framework of the agreed programme.
  • Co-ordinate own work with that of others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort.
  • Contribute to the planning of teaching programmes or research projects.
  • Manage own workload, with guidance if required.
  • Plan and manage own teaching and tutorials as agreed with subject leaders. Maintain records and materials in support of teaching activities.
  • Assist other staff as required e.g. with examinations and preparation of course materials.
  • Collaborate with academic colleagues on areas of shared interest e.g. course development, curriculum changes, collaborative or joint research projects. Collaborate with colleagues to identify and respond to the diversity of student’s needs.

Skills and Experience Required

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent professional qualification in subject relevant to teaching or research area.
  • Teaching Qualification (PGCE or equivalent).
  • Excellent breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline/subject area to work within own area.
  • Evidenced CPD to develop knowledge and teaching capability (teaching methods and techniques).
  • Practical experience of applying the teaching skills and techniques.
