INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND
We’re looking for a customer-driven and commercially focussed individual to join our proposition team and provide specialist expertise, build relationships, and do the right thing for our customers and the business.
As a Commercial Manager you’ll support the pricing of new and existing products through the application of commercial expertise on technical issues, managing the profitability of new and existing products.
We are looking for an individual with a curious and commercially focussed mindset who is willing to challenge and be challenged to ensure our propositions are competitive and profitable. The commercial support which the individual will provide will cover a variety of areas across the company and working collaboratively and developing excellent relationships with key business areas is essential.
The type of activities which the role would get involved with include reviewing existing pricing models and developing new pricing models, reviewing and challenging our commercial approaches, and developing commercial business cases for new proposition developments or company projects. In addition, ensuring that commercial drivers for the business are widely understood and embedded in planning processes is critical, and that these are then communicated clearly and concisely to senior management.
The role will not have any direct line management responsibilities at outset, but may over time be expanded to include some line management in line with any business requirements.

The commercial manager roles have traditionally been carried out by accounting or actuarial professionals, but we will consider any individual with necessary skills and experience from a commercial or product pricing background.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Analysing complex, technical and numerical problems, providing practical solutions and implementing these, normally within tight timescales.
  • Dealing with projects as the main representative of commercial issues and making decisions using judgement of the particular circumstances.
  • Understanding cash flows, assumptions, modelling and the relative importance of elements within a commercial context to know instinctively when answers are right or wrong.
  • Explaining decisions and rationale and communicating potentially negative results to customers and project groups and senior management who are trying to attain new business in a very competitive marketplace.
  • Training and coaching others in the team on how to approach complex technical and numerical problems and provide practical solutions.
  • Challenging decisions and proposals and backing this up with logical, reasoned arguments.
  • Demonstrating pricing and other business knowledge in order to answer technical queries about life and pensions products from a range of customers.
  • Representing the commercial team on company projects and new initiatives, to ensure that commercial principles are adopted.
  • Driving decisions within project groups to achieve desired objectives.
  • Performing actuarial calculations as required, including the specification and building of commercial models and software.
  • Gathering, analysing and interpreting data to determine its impact on the profitability of new and existing products.
  • Applying a curious mindset to models and assessing situations in order to determine financial risk and contingent evens and make appropriate recommendations to safeguard the company’s chosen financial position.
  • Managing documentation of pricing bases and historic changes to ensure that accurate records are maintained.
  • Quality assuring colleagues work to maintain a high of accuracy and consistency.

  • Has a strong commercial and technical background to assist in the decision making central to the role
  • Has the experience of engaging with senior stakeholders, both internal and external
  • Has experience of challenging peers and senior members of staff, and also of accepting challenge to drive better decision making
  • Has great personal integrity
  • Has a collaborative style, as working across the business is at the heart of the team’s day to day activity
    Desirable
  • Professional qualification (e.g. actuarial, accountancy), or has previously studied towards a professional qualification.
  • Understanding of Standard Life’s main product lines and key features of products
  • Has experience of building commercial or financial models which are for general or specific purposes.
