Overview

We are a new technology company in the field of agricultural robotics. We require a Lead Engineer with strong hands-on skills and a can-do, multi-tasking attitude to establish our build/assembly processes. The role will involve the build/assembly of autonomous robot vehicles from a liaison overlap with the Lead Designer, through to full build/assembly, testing and maintenance specifications, ready full-scale commercial production. You will also have an initial involvement in establishing the final production build/assembly facility.

You will not be expected to know about agriculture but have a detailed knowledge of lightweight electro-mechanical build/assembly with a range of materials and be expected to engage effectively with external contractors and 3rd Party Suppliers.
Responsibilities

  • Contribute to and respond to, new requirements and specifications
  • Work together with our Lead Designer who will construct detailed 3D/2D CAD drawings for the vehicles ready for build/assembly
  • Build/assemble the robotic vehicles, from plans to final operational product and test
  • Determine the best approach for build/assembly processes and document such
  • Determine the best manner in which to procure raw materials and the best Suppliers for such materials
  • Design, establish, develop and implement systems, policies and procedures around build/assembly processes for future build/assembly staff
  • Recruit and manage contract staff as and when required, preferably through known contacts
  • Manage build/assembly activities within an agreed budget and within agreed timelines
  • Rapidly identify problem areas and implement re-design or supplier change solutions
  • Identify suppliers for components, in liaison with our Lead Designer and appraise such components for their potential contribution to our internal solutions

Experience

  • Strong knowledge and experience of the build/assembly of lightweight electro-mechanical solutions, ideally mobile, ideally involving electric motor drive systems
  • Demonstrable experience as a Lead Engineer in a similar area to which we describe here
  • Strong knowledge of build/assembly tools, jigs, together with methods associated with lightweight construction, e.g. adhesives
  • Although not expected to work on a daily basis constructing CAD drawings, have some familiarity with CAD software and certainly be able to work with the outputs from such software, e.g. stress test animations, 3D renders, detailed 2D plans
  • Have sufficient knowledge of electrical systems sufficient to incorporate within the mechanical build
  • Ideally have some hands-on electro-mechanical design experience to effectively liaise with our Lead Designer
  • Ideally a graduate at first degree level, but not essential

Candidate
You will need a broad range of skills and experience and be able to adapt to a new company environment where roles and responsibilities change and evolve rapidly. You will also have a ‘can-do’ attitude solving problems by liaising with external contacts, their own contacts and with contract staff. Ultimately, you will hopefully go on to manage all engineering operations and initially, production set-up, within the company and will be excited by the opportunities presented by such an environment.
