Clinical Fellow in Anaesthesia and Advanced Perioperative Medicine Job Opening in Guildford

Clinical Fellow in Anaesthesia and Advanced Perioperative Medicine
One clinical fellow post is available from August 2020 for a period of six months. Applicants should be ST 6-7 or post-CCT Anaesthetists with the FRCA (or equivalent) and have an interest in perioperative medicine and pre-operative risk assessment. The aim of this fellowship is to provide the applicant with experience in all aspects of perioperative medicine in preparation for pursuing this interest as consultant and the post has been designed to meet the criteria for advanced training.
Royal Surrey is a busy district general hospital with orthopaedics, trauma, ENT, max fax, gynae and general surgery but in addition it is the regional oncological surgical hospital for much of Surrey and Sussex. Many of the highly specialized oncological surgical specialties are now established here and include oesophagogastric, hepatobilary, laparoscopic gastrointestinal, major urological, gynaecological, head and neck and maxillo facial oncology. We are also now one of the busiest robotic centres in the country. The development of these surgical specialties has been associated with exciting opportunities for anaesthetists to gain extra exposure in all of these areas.
Alongside the clinical experience available in theatres, this post would provide training and experience in all other aspects of perioperative medicine including:
Preoperative optimization, risk stratification and shared decision making through participation in our High-Risk Anaesthetic Clinics, IV iron service, CPET clinics and surgical specialty MDT meetings.
Quality improvement in intraoperative care – we have established enhanced recovery pathways for most of our surgical specialties and you would be involved in both delivering and developing these.
Analgesic modalities for major surgery – training available in wide variety of techniques for both awake and asleep surgery including thoracotomy, major abdominal surgery, breast and orthopaedics.
Postoperative care – our 28 bed ICU has a high number of perioperative admissions and are expert in delivering protocolized care in line with enhanced recovery principles. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to gain experience in delivering excellent postoperative care and optimizing patient outcomes. Additionally point of care ultrasound (POCUS) is used extensively and there is ample opportunity to gain experience with this.
Audit and Research – the department is involved with a number of perioperative research projects and there are many opportunities to gain experience in clinical research either through participating in ongoing trials or through support in running your own projects. The department also has close links with both the UCL and Brighton University perioperative MSc programmes and there is the potential for receiving a funded place on one of these courses.
Teaching – there are multiple opportunities to gain experience teaching junior doctors and other healthcare professionals with tutorials/OSCE/high fidelity simulation via our active education department
The post has a senior level of on-call clinical commitment which is primarily out of hours (night time and weekend) work. The on-call role is to oversee and assist 2 trainees in the Intensive Care Unit, participating in handover rounds and pro-actively managing patients in the ICU, and to oversee and assist 2 anaesthetic trainees in theatres, labour ward and anywhere else in the hospital where senior level anaesthetic or critical care input is required. Outside of the on-call commitment the rest of your job plan is entirely dedicated to achieving your personal goals within perioperative medicine. With the multiple opportunities on offer and a flexible approach from the department, you will be able to tailor your experience and training to optimise your CV.
