Consultant in Community Paediatrics (10PA)

Early years and Designated Doctor for safeguarding

Applications are invited for the post of Community Paediatric Consultant at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro. The post is part of an exciting programme of three replacement posts and a significant planned re-design of the service to strengthen the support we are able to give our complex children both in and out of hospital. Special interests in epilepsy, Looked after Children and Designated Doctor for Paediatric Safeguarding are of particular interest but applicants with other interests would be strongly considered. This post will join the team of 6 Consultant Community Paediatricians and of 20 Consultants in general and neonatal paediatrics.

The post holder will be part of the Community Child Health team taking consultant shared responsibility for early years children with Neurodisability in Cornwall. In addition they have a responsibility as Designated Doctor for Safeguarding. Once the post holder is appointed, there will be opportunity to revise job planning as part of ongoing service reorganisation.

The post includes a commitment to the Child Protection Day and On call rota (extended hours commitment 0700-1900). There is a dedicated child protection examination suite with a videocolposcope and there is close working with the Regional SARC (Sexual Assault Referral Centre). There is no commitment to the acute on-call rota.

In the community team there is one Associate Specialists and two Speciality Doctors. We also have a GP Speciality Doctor working on the patch. There are often one to two Speciality Registrars (ST4-5) on Community Paediatric attachment providing additional support and we are approved to support a Community Paediatrics Grid Trainee.

An enthusiastic commitment to partnership working with Cornwall’s Primary Care Trust and the Local Authority is expected and the ability to respond to the changing demands of Community Child Health services will be expected.

The department is actively involved in the delivery of the education programme of the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry [PCMD] and University of Exeter Medical School [UEMS]. Consideration will be given to a suitable applicant being awarded a senior honorary academic title with UEMS. Subject to academic performance, a joint academic/ clinical appointment might be possible in the future.

Cornwall is a beautiful county which offers an outstanding quality of life and providing many opportunities for outdoor activities, with its sailing waters, surfing beaches and rugged coastal pathways for walking, and cycling. There is a thriving arts and theatre scene as well as an interesting variety of eating places, including celebrity-owned restaurants within Cornwall. The major route in and out of the county is the A30 which connects with the M5 motorway at Exeter. There is an excellent rail service with daily passenger and sleeper services, and an airport at Newquay with daily connections to many cities throughout the UK and abroad.

Applicants are required to be on the GMC Specialist Register, or within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / EU equivalent certification at the time of interview.
