Policy Manager Job Openings in Swindon

will include:

  • Day-to-day monitoring of external consultations and Inquiries relevant to BBSRC, progressing actions and inputs as required, working with colleagues across BBSRC and UKRI’s Consultations and Inquiries Network:
    • Maintaining awareness of current and forthcoming consultations and Inquiries
    • Coordinating BBSRC’s inputs to UKRI responses to parliamentary Inquiries and other consultations, including initial drafting of BBSRC responses
    • Supporting the drafting of briefing packs for parliamentary Inquiry evidence sessions when required
    • Tracking progress of consultations and Inquiries, drafting summaries and analyses of inputs and outcomes from consultation and Inquiries
    • Maintaining electronic records of BBSRC and UKRI submissions and inputs.
  • Providing policy intelligence, analysis, advice and support by monitoring and analysing BBSRC's wider external policy environment proactively, so that we are kept informed of the wider context in which BBSRC operates
  • Coordinating and issuing a regular ‘policy round-up’ bulletin for internal comms
  • Supporting the Head of Policy and Senior Policy Manager, including working to ensure that BBSRC's cross-cutting biosciences policy portfolio is fit-for-purpose and our policies and position statements are up to date.
  • Policy areas include:
    • Access and Benefits Sharing/the UN Convention on Biodiversity
    • EU Exit
    • Genetic Technologies
    • Open Research
    • Research Conduct, Ethics, Integrity and Reproducibility
    • Use of Animals in Research.
  • Contributing to, or coordinating, briefings, papers and drafting official policy text in these areas and undertaking qualitative and/or quantitative analyses in evidence-gathering to support policy management
  • Participating in cross-office projects and teams where requested, to facilitate alignment of science or policy/strategy-related activities within BBSRC and wider UKRI
  • Supporting PSE or other BBSRC domains in other policy-relevant activities when required.

Shortlisting and Interview Criteria


  • Educated to Bachelor degree level in a biological sciences or related subject, and/or equivalent relevant experience
  • Good organisational skills: able to plan and prioritise a varied workload and ensure that work meets deadlines, whilst remaining flexible and adaptable to changing priorities and demands
  • Good communication skills, with ability to:
    • Analyse, interpret and summarise information from a range of sources
    • Write well-structured and clearly articulated documents aimed at internal and external audiences
    • Interpret and summarise primary and secondary data and information and use graphics and images to support the narrative
    • Design and deliver presentations to internal and external audience using a range of media.
  • Good interpersonal skills and effective team worker with ability to:
    • Establish and maintain good working relationships with others (internally and externally) and work well with colleagues at all levels to ensure work is completed
    • Respond to questions and deal with complex arguments, assisting colleagues where necessary
    • Work calmly in tight deadline scenarios
    • Think and work creatively to tackle problems and challenges
    • Show initiative and judgement within given constraints; ask for and give help when needed
    • Genuine interest in the aims and objectives of BBSRC
    • Competent in using standard Microsoft Office applications.


  • Master degree or PhD in a biological sciences or related subject
  • Experience of developing policy or strategy in a science or research-related context
  • Understanding of the landscape for UK and international bioscience research
  • Knowledge of the UK funding system for research and innovation
  • Interest in science policy development
  • Ability to identify, analyse and take account of emerging social, political and environmental trends that might impact on the work of the Policy team.

UKRI supports research in areas that include animal health, agriculture and food security, and bioscience for health which includes research on animals, genetic modification and stem cell research. Whilst you may not have direct involvement in this type of research, you should consider whether this conflicts with your personal values or beliefs.
