Khalsa Academies Trust

The Khalsa Academies Trust is a three-school Multi Academy Trust that supports local communities to help establish and run Sikh Schools. Three new non-executive directors are sought with experience in HR, Educational leadership or Marketing. Board meetings are held in Stoke Poges, Slough. Applicants of all faiths and of none are welcomed.

About the trust
The trust aims to provide inclusive outstanding schools based on Sikh values that inspire students to excel both academically and spiritually. The trust builds this vision through a strong partnership between passionate staff, committed learners, inspiring Governors and dedicated parents.

The trust currently comprises:

· The Khalsa Secondary School in South Bucks, which opened in 2013 as a Free School.

· The Khalsa Academy Wolverhampton, which opened in 2014 as a Free School.

· The Atam Academy in East London, which opened in September 2016.

Within the three schools of the trust, 75% of the pupil cohorts are Sikhs and the further 25% of students are from a wide range of faiths and backgrounds. In general, within the schools the proportion of pupils with English as an additional language in high and between 5% and 15% of the students receive free school meals.

The trust provides support to local schools and places importance on school improvement, staff development, and enabling young people to excel. The leadership team support schools in meeting the challenges of rising expectations through mutually supportive intervention and training. The trust takes responsibility for financial and resource management that delivers efficiency, effectiveness and economies of scale, so that schools can concentrate on the education provided.

Roles 1-3 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director

Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust. The core functions of their role are: ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; holding executive leaders to account for the educational and financial performance of a charitable company funded by the public purse.

The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust in compliance with its charitable objects, company and charity law.

Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and potential growth, and holding the CEO/CFO to account.

In the interests of safeguarding, all trustee appointments would be subject to an enhanced disclosure and barring service check.

Every trustee is expected to abide by the trust’s code of conduct and the seven principles of public life set out by Lord Nolan: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

Role 1 – HR:

The trust seeks an experienced HR professional, with a strong background working in large, multi-site organisations.

Role 2 – Education:

The trust seeks a senior educationalist to join the board. Ideally retired headteachers,

Ofsted Inspectors or experienced school governors. SEND experience would be welcomed.

Role 3- Marketing/Communications:

The trust seeks a non-executive director/trustee with strong and demonstrable senior leadership/ general management skills, with specific emphasis on branding and/or marketing, especially in relation to the growth of an organisation, shaping a strategy to effectively communicate impact and development of a medium- or large-scale, complex organisation. The trustee will use their skills to strategically support, challenge and advise the trust’s executives.
Time commitment
Six hours /month minimum.
