The Southampton High Energy Physics group has a three-year Early Stage Researcher (ESR) position leading to the award of PhD, starting from 1 September 2020.
You will perform research in Theoretical Particle Physics in the general area of theories beyond the standard model of particle physics and flavour physics, with particular relevance to theories of neutrino masses and early universe cosmology. During the first year, you will have the opportunity to take part optionally in PhD level training courses in Particle Physics and Cosmology which are designed to give a solid grounding in quantum field theory and group theory, as well as the Standard Model and beyond, but is primarily expected to begin a three-year research programme under the supervision of Professor Steve King.
The ESR positions include at least a long secondment in another European beneficiary, plus shorter stays in our partner organisations: at least at one major world laboratory, and at one of our private sector partners. ESRs are expected to participate actively in the yearly international workshop and school organized by the network. The ESRs will also be involved in outreach activities
The post is funded by the "HiDDeN" network, which focuses on Neutrino and Dark Matter phenomenology and their connection. The network involves nodes in several European countries and its associated partners extend to non-European countries.

Candidates should have a good undergraduate degree specialising in Physics at the level of a UK MPhys (Hons) qualification.
At the time of recruitment (i.e. first date of employment), you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to recruitment under this project. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.
At the time of recruitment you must not yet have been awarded your doctorate and must be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of your research career.
