Research Assistant/Associate in Spoken Dialogue Systems Job Opening in Edinburgh

Applications are sought for a Research Associate post in the Interaction Lab in the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. The Research Assistant will work on the EPSRC project “AISEC: AI Secure and Explainable by Construction” (see https://gow.epsrc.ukri.org/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/T026952/1), to investigate, develop, and evaluate machine learning approaches for controllable and interpretable Response Generation techniques for Conversational Agents/ Dialogue Systems. In particular, we seek a candidate with experience in neural approaches to natural language generation, dialogue systems, or closely related fields, as well as data collection and system evaluation. Key duties and responsibilities Principal Duties:
Detailed research duties are to implement and evaluate methods for interpretable and controllable response generation in conversational assistants, and to collect and analyse dialogue data. The successful applicant will also present the research outputs at project meetings and international conferences.The main duties of the post are to perform collaborative research on the above-named EPSRC project, to contribute to research publications, to write and submit research articles, and to participate in EPSRC project research meetings and international conferences.
Key Objectives:

  • To develop, implement and evaluate interpretable and controllable response strategies for conversational assistants.
  • To collect and analyse data.
  • To contribute to dissemination activities as specified in the project Technical Annexe.
  • To collaborate with project's verification and security experts in designing safer and more secure methods in NLP/NLG.
Education, qualifications and experience Essential criteria:
  • Experience (at PhD level) in Natural Language Processing, neural approaches to natural language generation or dialogue systems or closely related fields.
  • Evidence of a publication record in the aforementioned areas.
  • Experience with experimental data collection and analysis.
  • Excellent programming skills.
  • Knowledge of Deep Learning frameworks (such as TensorFlow/Keras, PyTorch, etc.) and NLP tools (such as SPACY, NLTK, AllenNLP, Standford-NLP, etc.).
